CLAFLIN — The Central Plains Oilers have captured 2A boys and girls basketball state titles, boys tennis and volleyball state championships in recent years.
The Oilers added two more trophies by sweeping the girls and boys divisions of Kansas Eight-Man Football Association state powerlifting championships. The Oiler girls have won five of the past six state titles. Central Plains and Quivira Heights have combined for nine boys state titles. The division is designated for schools which compete in 8-man and 6-man football.
Athletes have three chances to maximize their lifts in bench, clean and squat in each weight category.
Central Plains’ individual state champions are 165-pound Dalton Beck 790 (235-255-300); 173-pound Alex Barton 850 (215-300-335); and 148-pound Destiny Hurley, 505 (135-135-235).
“Weightlifting is a big part of what we do and what we accomplish in athletics,” said Central Plains football coach Chris Steiner. “Most of the athletes are enrolled in a weight class. There is also a weight training class that runs Tuesday and Thursday mornings before school.”
Steiner credits Central Plains coaches Pat Stiles and Dustin Robison for the team success.
“We’re blessed to have coaches like Pat Stiles and coach Dustin Robison,” Steiner said. “We push weightlifting for every sport. It helps you improve no matter what sport you compete in.”
Pawnee Heights’ 132-pound Ashlee Miller 455 (125-160-170) also captured a state title.
