GARDEN CITY — The Central Plains boys tennis team rode a runner-up finish by doubles team of Kade Beck and Brett Liebl to the runner-up Class 3-1A state tennis trophy.

Beck and Liebl lost 6-7 (7-5), 6-1, 6-0 to Kansas City Christian’s Jackson VanderAark and Mitchell Paul in Saturday’s doubles championship match.

Beck and Liebl advanced to the finals with a hard-fought 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 semifinal victory over Hutchinson Trinity’s Dylan DeLuca and Jacob Harcrow. Beck and Liebl defeated Hesston’s Jorge Morales-Jeb Carlson 6-2, 6-0 and Conway Springs’ Trenton Jones and Josh Dugan 6-0, 6-1.

Sterling won the team championship with 40 points and earned a pair of head-to-head victories against Central Plains that essentially determined the team championship.

Sterling’s William Weiner placed third and Kyler Comley placed fifth in singles. Max Fulbright and Edward Weiner placed seventh and Brett Riffel and Kyler Comley finished ninth in doubles.

Devin Ryan placed seventh with a 9-3 victory over Meade’s Andrea Dentamoro. Ryan won three of five matches and lost 7-5, 6-4 to Sterling’s William Weiner in the second round after winning 6-1, 6-0 over Hiawatha’s Joseph Kunkel.

Sterling’s Brett Riffel-Kenan Comley defeated Paxton Hammeke-Lawson Oeser of Central Plains, 6-4, 6-2. Hammeke and Oeser finished with a 1-2 record.

Oiler Aaron Schneweis lost 6-4, 6-4 to Wichita Independent’s Gabe Carnley.

Hoisington’s Jared Curtis-Cameron Knapp finished a strong tournament with a 11th-place 9-2 victory over Grady Jacobs and Kaylan Olivas of SW Heights. Curtis and Knapp finished with a 3-3 record. They lost 6-1, 6-1 to Dylan DeLuca-Jacob Harcrow of Hutchinson Trinity.

Hoisington’s Tre Hinds-Michael MacMahon lost both matches. Hoisington’s Kirk Reisner lost two matches after losing a hard-fought 6-3, 0-6, (10-8) tiebreaker to Chaparral’s Denver Hartson that was decided by one point.
