Panther girls rally for key WAC victory

GARDEN CITY – The Great Bend girls basketball team was down 18 points against hot-shooting Garden City when they showed the heart of a champion.

The Panthers rallied from a 29-11 deficit to overwhelm Garden City 68-58 for a two-game road sweep to start the Western Athletic Conference race.  The Panthers (5-2, 2-0 WAC) play Hays High at home Tuesday.

Leading scorer Carley Brack tied her career high with 27 points as she consistently drove the basketball past the Buffaloes and got to the free throw line. Carly Dreiling added 17 points and Keely Ireland scored a career high 11 points.

Brack scored 12 points as the Panthers started their comeback with a 14-6 streak to end the half behind 35-25.

Garden City’s Alyssa Long and Beth Guymon each scored twice for a 45-29 lead.

But Great Bend (5-2, 2-0 WAC) burned the Buffaloes with a stunning 27-4 scoring run that turned a 45-29 deficit into a 56-49 lead.

Brack ignited the second-half run with three baskets and Dreiling contributed a score and a steal in a 10-0 run for a 45-39 score. The Panthers finished off the Buffaloes with a 14-2 run keyed by Brack and Dreiling for a 56-49 lead. Dreiling contributed 13 second-half points and Brack added 12 points.

Dreiling dished to Brack, Dunekack assisted to Kate Warren and Brack passed to Dreiling for key team assists during the second-half run.

Great Bend pressured the Buffaloes into 11 second-half turnovers that were converted into scores.
