Panther golfer places fourth

MCPHERSON — Great Bend’s Kelby Titus rallied from a rough start for a 6-over-76 that placed fourth at Monday’s McPherson Tournament at Turkey Creek Golf Course.
“Kelby Titus had a solid tournament,” said Great Bend coach Travis McAtee. “He got off to a slow start, 4-over after seven holes. On the remaining 11, he settled in nicely, to finish at 6-over 76. When Kelby cashes in on a few more birdie opportunities, he has an excellent chance to shoot lower scores.”
Defending Class 2A state champion Salina Sacred Heart (303) beat Hays High (318) by 15 strokes. Sacred Heart’s Grant Herrenbruck (70), last year’s 2A state champion, earned medalist honors by four strokes over teammate Tate Herrenbruck.
The par 70 Turkey Creek layout proved to be a challenge with 20 mph northwest winds that brought hazards and out-of-bounds into play.
Great Bend (400) placed 12th with Jared Divis (102), Isaac Panzer (107) and Payton Doll (115) also counting.
“The challenge Monday at Turkey Creek was the winds on a hazard-rich course,” McAtee said. “Many of the holes contain water hazards and out-of-bounds. Our inexperience was evident in our struggles to make good scores. Our scores included many penalty strokes, especially on the back nine holes, which we played first.”
McAtee was pleased that the players adjusted and improved by 6.5 strokes per player on the front nine.
“After high scores on the back nine, all six settled down and shot better,” he said. “Some improved more than 10 shots, which was a positive. However, our scores are too high. We’ve got to learn to control what we can and execute better golf shots as we go forward with tournaments.”
McAtee said the Panthers will work on course management in the next week.
“We look forward to a week and a half of practice before our next tournaments in Dodge City and Salina at the end of next week,” he said.
St. John (410) placed 13th with Derek Hacker (101), Greyson Collins (102), Braden Witt (103) and Cade Roberts (104) counting.
