Great Bend’s boys swimming team defeated Garden City 120-48 and tied Campus 85-85, something coach Steve Beaumont has never witnessed Thursday at the Barton pool.
“For two teams to end up in a tie in a dual meet (or any meet) is very rare in swimming. I’ve been doing this for 30 years, and that is a first. What a great meet against Campus,” he said. “We finished second to them at the first meet in Salina, so we had discussed with the team that this was a good way to measure how much we have improved.
“Maybe Campus coach Kennedy and I will have to have a rock-paper-scissors competition when we see each other at the 5A state meet to determine a winner. It was a great meet with several lead changes over the last few events.”
The 100-yard butterfly event swung the momentum.
“The butterfly event really turned things around,” he said. “That really seemed to spark us. Allen To and Cal Kaiser put together a 1-2 finish that seemed to propel us going into the second half of the meet. We won five of the last seven events and in dual meets, that is big.”
Cole Pierce, Malachi Williams, Allen To and Eli Hutchinson competed on the 200 medley relay (1:57.59). Isaac Panzer, To, Williams and Matthew Huslig competed on the 200 relay (1:42.43). Huslig, Pierce, Daniel Abbott and Kaiser swam in the 400 relay (3:48.69).
“It was great to see our kids come back from the Christmas break and swim so well,” Beaumont said. “We hit a season high form time improvements, and overall I was very pleased with our ability to finish races strong. Some of our kids are starting to race at a different level. They feel confident about our training and their preparation, and that really transfers into how they are competing on race days.”
