MCPHERSON — Great Bend’s tennis team placed eighth with 12 points at Tuesday’s McPherson Invitational tennis tournament.
Malachi Williams-Israel Esparza led the Panthers with a 10th-place finish in a 8-3 loss to Winfield’s Tayton Donham-Drake Hill. Williams-Esparza also defeated Winfield’s Chris Norton-Noah Everett 8-7 (-8-6) and Newton’s Daniel Buller-Joel Gobulski 8-6.
Panthers Robert Frizell-Matthew Phillips placed 12th with a 8-6 loss to Newton’s Buller-Gobulski. Frizell-Phillips defeated Hays High’s Seth Shorb-Brandon Kennemer, 8-7 (7-4).
Josh Hoisington placed 14th with a 8-0 loss to McPherson’s Aaron Carlson. Nicholson edged teammate Alex Smith 8=7 (7-5). Smith lost 8-0 to Derby’s Michael Martinez to finish 16th.
McPherson’s Jarrod Nowak beat teammate Andrew Snell 8-6 for first place in singles. Nolan Schrader-Kaden Stewart defeated Derby’s Brady Walls-Daniel Dunn, 8-2 for first place in doubles. McPherson Red scored 66 points to place first and Newton placed runner-up (36).
The Panthers compete in the Great Bend home meet Saturday.
