WICHITA — The Great Bend High School wrestling team won eight of its 13 matches in the first-place dual against host Kapaun Mt. Carmel on Saturday at the Duwane Miller KMC Duals Tournament.
“I think we wrestled well,” Panthers head coach Norbert Muth said. “We placed first, obviously, that’s where we wanted to be.
“As a coach, you always want to be better. You always see things that you can improve on, but I think we did good this weekend.”
The Panthers, who are ranked No. 6 in the latest Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association poll, swept four rounds of pool play, the closest dual being a 61-15 dismantling of Wichita West, to advance to the first-place dual.
“On paper, I thought we’d do fairly well in pool play,” Muth said. “Looking at the teams, I thought Augusta, other than Kapaun, was the only team that was on par with us.”
Senior Chris Burley, a Class 5A state champion as a sophomore in the 112-pound weight class, swept all five of his matches, winning by fall in all but his match against Kapaun’s Jacob Millis.
While he was the only Great Bend wrestler to go undefeated in all five duals, he was the only one undefeated on the day as five others ran into an open weight class against incomplete teams.
Greg Burley (132), a junior and Chris’ younger brother, went 4-0. As did Kade Sander (138), Zach Schridde (145) and Bryce Hofmeister (160).
Justin Henry (195) finished 3-0.
