Panthers split with Monarchs

HAYS -- Brett Basye and Logan Perry pitched Great Bend past Hays-Thomas More Prep 5-3 for a split of their twin bill Thursday. The Monarchs won the nightcap 7-5. Great Bend is 5-3.
GREAT BEND 5, TMP 3 -- Basye pitched five solid innings and Perry threw two frames to earn the save.
The Panthers scored two runs in the fourth inning. Brady Michel singled and Brayden Smith walked. Bryce Lytle's double scored Michel and Smith scored on Payton Mauler's groundout for a 2-0 lead.
The Panthers scored three runs in the fifth inning. Jacob Murray singled and scored on Anson Hall's single after a sacrifice bunt by Jaxx Hillman. Michel singled. Hall scored when Jared Maneth reached on an error. Brayden Smith's single scored Michel for a 5-0 lead.
Gavin Schumacher's triple scored Cole Zimmerman and Schumacher scored on Tate Garcia's groundout to slice the lead to 5-2 in the fifth inning. Schumacher scored the Monarchs' seventh-inning run.
The Panthers turned a pair of double plays, including an unassisted double play by second baseman Jaxx Hillman. Catcher Jared Maneth threw out Ryan Ruder on an attempted steal.
TMP 7, GREAT BEND 5 -- The Panthers rallied for a 5-4 lead before the Monarchs won the game on Rickey Hockett's two-run homer. Jared Maneth and Brayden Smith each drove in two runs. Anson Hall singled in a run.
In the third, Jaxx Hillman tripled and scored on Hall's single. Michel was hit by a pitch and Maneth doubled home Hall and Michel to slice the Monarchs' lead to 4-3.
Hall and Maneth reached on errors and Smith's single drove home two runs for a 5-4 lead in the fifth inning.
The Monarchs scored four first-inning runs off Anson Hall. Ryan Ruder's double was followed by Jared Vitztum's RBI single. Chase Romme doubled home Vitztum for a 2-0 lead. Justin Pfeifer's RBI single drove home Romme. Chase Werth's RBI single drove in Pfeifer for a 4-0 lead.
In the fifth, Hockett walked, stole second base and scored on Vitztum's RBI single. Schumacher reached on an error to start the sixth inning off Bryce Lytle. Tate Garcia forced Schumacher, but Hockett drilled a two-run game-winning home run for a 7-5 victory.
