GODDARD — Great Bend’s No. 3 state-ranked Keaton Sander (37-4, 138) lost to Arkansas City’s Jake Besson in the Class 5A wrestling regional championship match. The Panthers finished seventh with 101.5 points.
Great Bend qualified eight wrestlers for the 5A state meet at Park City Feb. 24-25.
Also qualifying for the Class 5A state meet were Drew Liles (106, 4th), Carsyn Schooler (113, 7th), Eric Vazquez (120, 5th), George Weber (126, 5th), Conrad Montoya (132, 6th); Gage Fritz (145, 7th) and Noah Presson (285, 4th).
“We wrestled about like I thought we would,” said Great Bend coach Nathan Broeckelman. “We have eight wrestlers making the trip to the state tournament and they all want to bring home some hardware. There is no doubt in my mind we can’t bring up eight medals this weekend. We need to brush up on a few little mistakes.”
Liles and Vazquez lost their semifinal matches. No. 1 state-ranked Michael Spangler of Kapaun-Mt. Carmel beat Liles 15-5 in the semifinals. No. 3 state-ranked Will Spexarth of Goddard beat Vazquez 13-2 in the semifinals. No. 4 state-ranked Gage Fritz lost 3-1 to No. 2 ranked Paul Stuart of Andover in the quarterfinals.
No. 5 ranked Newton’s Grant Treaster defeated Liles, 10-0 for third place. Emporia’s Jeremy Dold downed Presson 6-2 for third place.
Vazquez pinned Wichita Carroll’s Jaleb Gann in 29 seconds for fifth place. Newton’s Brody Roberson downed Montoya 5-0 for fifth place.
Carsyn Schooler defeated Topeka West’s Jordan Jellison 6-1 for seventh place. Weber defeated Kapun-Mt. Carmel’s Tony Meitler 6-2 for seventh place.
