The Great Bend High School boys’ bowling team got beat by Salina Sacred Heart, but topped Western Athletic Conference foe Dodge City on Tuesday afternoon at Walnut Bowl.
The Lady Panthers handled Dodge in a dual as Sacred Heart doesn’t have a girls team.
“I told the boys that it’s nice to beat everybody, but our main goal is still intact,” GBHS head coach Mike Perry said. “We swept Dodge, which was the important thing. We wanted to get a leg up on the WAC.”
The Panthers finished at 2,484 pins, falling well short of Sacred Heart’s 2,728.
It might be a preview to a Class 5-1A regional, which Great Bend will be hosting and Sacred Heart will be attending, and also a wake-up call for the Panthers.
“Man, they were on fire,” Perry said. “We knew they had two good bowlers, but we didn’t know about Nos. 3 and 4. They got going and they didn’t stop.
“I think it was a good lesson for our guys, because we might have started thinking we were invincible. We kept waiting for it to come, and it never did.”
The Great Bend boys did sweep all 11 possible points in WAC competition against Dodge City.
“The important thing is beating Dodge City,” Perry said. “That was our big goal heading into today.”
Kolt Ramey led Great Bend with a 625 series, though it was Sacred Heart’s Ryan Franzen with the competition’s highest series at 754.
The Lady Panthers swept Dodge City as well to gain 11 points in the WAC.
Miranda Hejny led Great Bend with a series of 597, the highest of the girls competition.
Jessica Sterba had the second highest series at 531.
“The girls were led against by Miranda,” Perry said. “Jessica Sterba stepped up today. It was nice to have the top two series. The girls came out really focused and got it done.”
Great Bend bowls again today at 3:30 p.m. It travels to Wichita Collegiate.
