Several GBHS athletes earn medals on opening day of state meet

WICHITA — Great Bend High School’s Chris Burley, Selam Ball, Hannah Middleton, Jacy Quade and Chon Chavez finished in the top seven in their individual events to earn medals on Friday.
Quade, a senior thrower, finished second in the shot put (38 feet, seven inches) and third in the discus (125-3).
Ball finished fourth in the pole vault (10-0), and Middleton finished fifth (9-0).
Burley claimed fourth in the pole vault (13-6).
Chavez captured fifth place in the 3,200 run (9:51.66), beating his personal best by 21 seconds.
Matt Moyd finished third in the preliminaries of the 110-meter hurdles (15.44) to qualify for Saturday’s finals at the Class 6-1A state track and field championships.
Moyd finished 14th in the 200 dash (24.08).
Hannah Wondra finished eighth in the preliminary race of the 400 (1:01.07) to qualify for Saturday’s finals.
Darion Yager finished 14th in the 300 hurdles (44.18).
