The Shrine Bowl is almost here.
The 40th annual renewal of the prestigious high school all-star football game for graduated seniors from across the state is set for Saturday night.
Game time is set for 7 at Yager Stadium on the Washburn University campus, located at 1700 Southwest College Ave. in Topeka.
Hunter Harrison, a linebacker from Great Bend, and Bryce Steiner, a defensive back/quarterback from Central Plains, will be playing in the benefit game to help provide medical care at the Shriners Hospital for Children in St. Louis, Mo.
Headed by retired Philadelphia Eagles and Atlanta Falcons linebacker Mark Simoneau, the Shrine Bowl Combine/Clinic will be held on Saturday morning at Yager Stadium.
Simoneau was a Shrine Bowl player during his prep days at Smith Center High School. He went on to establish himself as an All-America selection at Kansas State.
Check-in is 9 a.m., with the testing starting at 10 and the clinic running until 2 p.m.
A minimal fee is used to offset expenses with proceeds benefiting Shriners Hospitals for Children. Underclassmen participants will automatically be put on a nominations list to play in the Shrine game their senior year.
The All-Star cross-country race will feature 13 male and female-based categories. Races will start and finish in Yager Stadium, with over 8,000 expected attendance. There is a slight chance the race will be moved to early morning, depending on the heat, humidity and race conditions expected, according to the race committee.
