HAYS— Hays took advantage of some early defensive miscues by the Panthers as the Indians went on to defeat Great Bend, 3-1 in WAC play Monday.

Just 30 seconds into the contest, the Indians’ Talyn Kleweno dribbled past the Panther defense inside the 18-yard box and scored. She struck again in the 25th minute mark on a hard roller that made it’s way into the Great Bend net to take a 2-0 lead at the break.

Brooke Russell converted for Hays in the second half on a bank shot that hit the post and bounced into the net giving the Indians a 3-0 lead at the 52nd minute.

Great Bend’s Keely Ireland managed the only goal for the Panthers at the 76th minute to avoid a shut out. Ireland’s kick came off an assist by Jessica Loera but Great Bend was not able to produce enough offensive momentum as Hays claimed the 3-1 victory.

The Panthers drop to 2-6-1 on the season (1-4-1, WAC) while Hays bumps their season mark to 4-6-1 (2-3-1, WAC).

Great Bend will host Dodge City on Thursday at 4 p.m. before heading to Liberal on Friday for a makeup game against the Redskins.
