Great Bend forward Keely Ireland belted out three goals while fellow sophomores Araceli Delgadillo and Melani Garcia scored a goal each to lead the Panthers to a 6-1 win over visiting Liberal in Tuesday afternoon play.
The Panthers had help from junior Alondra Garcia who nailed a corner kick late in the first half. Liberal posted their only score with less than 15 minutes in the second period as Great Bend would go on to claim the 6-1 victory.
On Monday play at Emporia, Garcia drilled a long kick to tie the game late in the first half. Emporia would then score on a goalkeeper error to take a 2-1 lead at the break. The Spartans would put up three unanswered points in the second to take a 5-1 advantage. A free kick by Garcia was all the Panthers were able to muster late in the closing half as Emporia would go on to take a 5-2 win.
In earlier play at Wichita Independent, Great Bend rallied from a 3-1 first half deficit and went on to defeat WI, 4-3. Delgadillo notched the first goal before Ireland grabbed three straight scores including a goal with 30 seconds remaining in the contest.
With the win against Liberal, the Panthers open WAC play at 1-0 and improve to 2-1 on the season. Great Bend will face Garden City in the first part of a two-game road swing on April 9. The Panthers will return to Cavanaugh Fields to take on Hays on April 14.
