HOISINGTON — It was a drop back to Earth on Friday for the Hoisington High School softball team.
After a seven-game winning streak that included a 13-3 victory over Sedgwick in the first game, Hoisington fell 10-6 in eight innings in the second at Logan Field.
“We’ve been playing well lately, of course this is probably the best team we’ve played in a while,” Hoisington head coach Lee Van Scyoc said. “We had a win streak going, and we had hoped to keep it going, especially on senior night.
“We won the first one. It always takes pressure off you. You ought to play more relaxed. Of course, we probably played too relaxed probably.”
In the second game, Hoisington scored first with an RBI from Tana Hickel in the bottom of the second inning, and an RBI from Jayde Beck in the third.
Sedgwick knotted the game at two, scoring both runs on a throwing error by catcher Haley Acker. Sedgwick scored another run in the fifth and two in the sixth to make it 5-2.
“What really hurt was those two or three errors we had right in a row,” Van Scyoc said. “We misplayed the bunt and overthrew first. The rightfielder missed the ball. We threw it in and we threw it over. I mean, it was like a comedy of errors, but we battled back.”
In the bottom of the sixth, Hoisington’s Bailey Barnard scored on an error, Stephanie Stephens drove in a run and Katy Willis had an RBI single to tie the game and eventually send it into extra innings.
Sedgwick’s Chelsea Crowl and Allison Thomas each hit a 2-run single in the eighth inning, and Chelsea Grandstaff scored on an error to win.
“We just had another one of them innings,” Van Scyoc said.
It was the third extra-inning loss for Hoisington, which fell to 12-6 overall this season.

GAME 2
Hoisington 13,
Sedgwick 3
After falling behind 3-1, Hoisington picked up the pace in the fourth inning.
Hoisington was able to score four runs in the fourth, six runs in the fifth and two runs in the sixth to end the game with the 10-run rule.
In the final three innings, Hoisington had five doubles, including two from Mykela Riedl.
“Those doubles are key,” Van Scyoc said. “When we played (Thursday), there were two times when we had runners on first and third and she laid down the most perfect bunt and everybody was safe both times. We scored both times.
“She’s been bunting well and then today, she was hitting well.”
Hoisington travels to Larned on Tuesday for a Mid-Central Activities Association triangular with host Larned and Ellinwood.
After that, Hoisington will compete in a Class 3A regional tournament at Pratt on Monday, May 14.
