Varying types of scenarios could unfold Friday night in the Class 5A District 6 football picture.
Yet, the bottom line is that Great Bend High School needs to beat Salina South by seven or more points to secure a berth in the state playoffs.
“There’s a number of scenarios, but if we win by seven or more over Salina South, we’re in,” Great Bend head coach Bo Black said.
Still, entering the final week of the regular season, all four teams still have a shot at making the playoffs
Salina Central, which is 2-0 in district play, sits at a district-leading plus 16 in the district points system. Central beat Great Bend, 42-20, last Friday night, and defeated Salina South, 31-28, in Week 1 of district play.
“The most you can get (in the district points system) is plus 13 (or minus-13, in any one game) and Central won by three over South,” Black said of Central’s current plus 16 stature. “We’re sitting at minus-2, South is at minus-6 and Hays is at minus-8.”
Translated, if the Panthers (1-1 in the district) beat South (3-5) by seven points or more, they’ll be sitting at plus 5 and will advance to the playoffs with a 2-1 record — no matter what the other teams do.
“If you put other scenarios together, if Hays (1-1 district) beats Central by 10, it will put them at plus 2,” Black said.
Providing Central loses by 10 points, it would out still be at plus 6. The most points the Mustangs could slip is minus-13, no matter how many points they could lose by, which would put them at plus 3.
If South beats Great Bend, it would dash the Panthers’ playoff hopes altogether and thrust the Cougars into the playoff picture, providing Central is upset by Hays.
