ST. JOHN — The St. John High School boys’ basketball team made 50 percent of its 3-pointers in the first half to jump ahead of Larned 38-14 by halftime.
The Tigers beat the Indians 67-41 on Friday night.
St. John, which had four players in double digits scoring, went on an 11-2 run to end the first quarter ahead 16-6.
Kade Kinammon dropped in one of his two 3-pointers to get the Tigers started. Ethan Long followed that up with a layup.
Esai Macias, who finished with a team-leading 12 points, put in a jumper. Zuriel Reyes put in a pair of free throws, and Trey Nelson scored the final two points in the run.
“It felt like we were pretty balanced,” St. John head coach Clint Kinnamon said. “You get several guys in that seven to 12 range, and I’d rather have that than have one get 25 any day of the week. Obviously the balance really helped us. (Spencer) Nusser had 10. Reyes had 11. (Dean) Wade had 10. Macias had 12.”
Larned had a 12-0 run to finish the third quarter, but it was already behind 51-22.
Cameron Brown led Larned with a game-high 20 points. Brown scored 12 of those in the third quarter.
“Our transition game is where we really excel,” Larned head coach Kevin Brown said. “Teams try to take that away, but in that third quarter we were making stops on defense, so we can make those transitions, and (Cameron Brown and Jahman Hill) really do a good job finishing.”
Jamil Shoemaker put in a pair of 3-pointers during the run.
Freshman Wade, in his second game with the Tigers, finished with 10 points and five rebounds.
“This is actually only the second game that he’s played,” Kinnamon said of Wade. “He had a broken foot early in the year. We played him about 12 minutes against Ellinwood, just getting his feet wet again. This is his first time he’s played extended minutes.
“Part of it was I just wanted to get him conditioned because he hadn’t had as much conditioning this year. We had him pretty gassed at times out there, but that’s OK.”
