Great Bend's Isaac Panzer, a double winner

HAYS — Great Bend’s swimmers swept seven events and three relays to place first at the Hays Invitational with 698 points to outdistance Hays High (334) and Junction City (311).
Double winners were Panthers Jordan Boone, 200 freestyle (2:08.5); 100 freestyle (57.47) and Isaac Panzer, 50 free (24.32); 100 butterfly (1:02.93).
“Our veteran swimmers performed well,” said Great Bend coach Steve Beaumont. “We’ve seen vast improvement from the younger swimmers who have made great strides from their first meet.”
Individual winners were Phane Pedigo, 100 backstroke (1:04.49); Zach Seymour, 100 breaststroke (1:18.38); and Sean Willims, 500 freestyle (6:06.34). Pedigo earned the tightest victory of the day by edging teammate Dawson Clark (1:05.0) in a photo finish.
“That was definitely one of the most exciting races you’ll ever see,” Beaumont said. “You’ll always see a couple of close finishes, but that’s one of the first times where both of our guys were at the front. That was a fun race.”
The Panthers swept the three relays — 200 medley relay, 1:52.78 (Phane Pedigo, Sean Williams, Dawson Clark, Corey Harbaugh); 200 free relay, 1:43.1 (Zach Seymour, Corey Harbaugh, Connor Furrey, Isaac Panzer); and the 400 free relay, 3:54.89 (Isaac Panzer, Phane Pedigo, Sean Williams, Dawson Clark).
Finishing runner-up were Panthers Dawson Clark, 100 back (1:04.5) and 200 IM (2:19.23) with a state-qualifying time; Connor Furrey, 100 fly (1:08.92); Corey Harbaugh, 100 free (57.98); Phane Pedigo, 50 free (25.59); Dawson Clark, 200 IM (2:19.23) and the 200 medley relay, 2:10.75 (Allan To, Malachi Williams, Cal Kaiser, Zach Seymour).
Clark has also bettered the state qualifying standard in the 100 butterfly. Other Panther state qualifiers are Isaac Panzer (50 Free, 23.91) and Sean Williams (100 Breast, 1.09.02) and the 200 free relay, the 200 medley relay and the 400 free relay.
Beaumont mixed up his lineup on a day the Panthers dominated the races.
“We entered kids in races they had not seen,” he said. “It was a very encouraging day. We entered the kids is some different events and found out what we needed. In some caees, we were pleasantly surprised by how well we performed.”
The Panthers compete Saturday at Wichita Heights.
