Unbeaten Troy gained revenge against defending Class 2-1A state baseball champion Pittsburg Colgan, but it wasn’t easy.
Troy survived 14-11 when relief pitcher Reid Greaser induced a game-ending double play on batter Logan VanBecelaere. Colgan defeated Troy 14-2 en route to its fourth consecutive state baseball title last year.
Troy built an 11-2 lead on 19-time state champion Colgan, but the Panthers rallied for nine runs in the last five innings.
Troy’s Cuttar Huss, Greaser and Alex Martinez each delivered three hits. Troy scored five runs in the first inning when Marcus Martinez and Brant Hamilton delivered two-run hits and Alex Martinez ripped an RBI single.
Troy’s Cuttar Huss singled twice and Greaser and Tyler Franken delivered doubles in a six-run second inning for an 11-2 lead. Cuttar Haas and Greaser delivered RBI singles and Brody Winder’s single and an error produced three valuable fourth-inning insurance runs.
Colgan rallied by scoring runs in five innings against four Troy pitchers.
BLUESTEM 8, OXFORD 1 — Bluestem starter Dakota Clift scored three runs as roared past Oxford 8-1 to qualify for a showdown against Troy.
Tritten Beavers tripled and Blake Bevan doubled in a two-run first inning started by an error. Clift scored and Coy Moran delivered an RBI single in a two-run third inning. Beavers scored in the fifth inning. Moran added an RBI single in the sixth inning. Nicholas Laidler and Cadence McHaley scored seventh-inning runs. Dylan Reuter singled home Dakota Mitchell for Oxford’s third-inning run.
ELLIS 7, WABAUNSEE 0 — Ellis pitcher Easton Smith threw a one-hitter and struck out 14 batters, striking out the side in the first, second, fifth and sixth innings. Riley Tubbs' single was the lone Wabaunee base hit. Bryaden Bittel singled home a run and Clayton Feik and Brevin LaBarge forced home runs on walks in a three-run first inning. Martin Hernandez, Dalton Hensley and Smith delivered RBI singles in a four-run fourth inning.
CHASE CO. 11, MOSCOW 5 – Chase County scored seven first-inning runs and coasted past Moscow 11-5 in a lightning-delayed quarterfinal. Hunter Groh doubled and Brendan Johnson, Arlen Sigel, Trey Benjamin, Wyatt Reyer, Jacob Sharp and Colton Potts singled in a seven-run inning. Potts and Sigel singled in a two-run third inning.
Groh and Benjamin delivered singles in the fourth and Joel Jirak doubled in the sixth.
