ELLINWOOD — Red-hot Smoky Valley swept Great Bend 35-37, 20-25, 25-16 and Ellinwood 25-19, 25-19 in a volleyball triangular Monday.
Ellinwood’s Jenna Oelke received 10 serves with five kills. Allison Panning had nine serves received and six digs. Jenna Caspers had 10 assists. Brittney Beck had 17 serves received.
Ellinwood (10-5) spiked the Panthers 18-25, 25-20, 25-23. The Panthers lost two of the sets by two points.
“For us this has to be a learning experience that errors add up quickly,” said Great Bend coach Kelsey Perry. “We can’t make them and be on the winning side at the end of the night. Volleyball is a game of momentum. We couldn’t get it going in our direction tonight.”
The Panthers lost a hard-fought first set against the Vikings, which earned eight of 37 points. Camryn Dunkeack delivered 12 kills and 20 digs. Baylee Beck had 23 digs. Kate Warren provided 10 kills and four stuff blocks.
“Against Smoky Valley we made a lot of errors, and that was a big factor,” Perry said. “We played well offensively at the net. We came back strong in the second set. But the errors were too much to overcome and we fell behind early. Playing a long first set, and going three sets drained us.”
Perry bemoaned the unforced errors against Ellinwood after a promising first set. The third set ended with the Panthers handing the Eagles three points on missed serves.
Beck delivered 18 digs and Dunkack had 15 digs. Wareen provided 11 kills and three stuff blocks.
Ellinwood’s Jenna Oelke had seven kills and 14 serving points. Allison Panning had seven kills and eight serving points.
“The first set we served very aggressive and won the hustle plays,” she said. “The second set we didn’t focus and play aggressive. The third set we were up big and let them creep back in. Our evening of errors was not enough to win. The team was gassed but Ellinwood played really well.”
