If you watch Great Bend bowler Jordan Black closely, it’s hard to tell how well he’s rolling at Walnut Bowl.
But when his work is done for the day, Black will flash his trademark smile. Black’s 703 series marked his fourth consecutive 700 series, a school record. Black captured his second consecutive WAC Player of the Year honors with a 227 scoring average. Ninth-grade teammate Bryce Moore placed as WAC runner-up with a 209 average. Kameron Keener (197) also earned first-team All-WAC honors.
Black has posted consecutive series of 760, 717, 704 and 703. Black scored a spare or a strike in 29 of 30 frames. Black earned first-place honors in his third tournament of the season.
“I’m playing with a lot of confidence right now,” Black said. “Pretty much, I’m feeling pretty good about every shot I’m throwing. I try and stay on a pretty even keel.”
Black said he stayed focused on his next shot and has to think back to remember how many strikes he’s recorded.
“I stay focused on my next shot,” Black said. “I don’t think about my score when I’m playing.”
The Panthers captured back-to-back WAC championships with a 69-53 scoring edge on runner-up Liberal. Corbin Stanley (190) earned honorable mention All-WAC. A.J. Roberts recorded the day’s second highest series (683) Thursday. Dalton Dicks (539) also competed for the WAC champions. Great Bend is the site of 5A regional bowling Feb. 23 at Walnut Bowl.
“It’s nice to maintain momentum going to regionals next week,” said Great Bend coach Mike Perry. “Jordan Black has been really sharp lately. Jordan Black and Bryce Moore have been a nice combination at the top of our lineup. It was nice to see A.J. Roberts step up his game today. It was great to see the guys keep moving in a positive direction.”
Defending 6A state champion Garden City dominated the girls division with 80 points, led by WAC Player of the Year Faith Whited (191) and teammates Karly Larson (188), Ryleigh Whitehurst (184) and Angelina Leeper (170) on the first team. Garden City posted five of the six highest scores Thursday.
Dodge City was runner-up (48) and Great Bend (32) placed third. Great Bend’s Jordan Vsetescka (182) earned All-WAC honors for the second consecutive year.
