VALLEY CENTER — Great Bend’s wrestlers earned eight state berths led by third-place finishers Drew Liles (37-7, 113), Carsyn Schooler (17-9, 120), and George Weber (39-9, 132). Gage Fritz (32-8, 152) placed fourth. The Panthers qualified for the 5A state wrestling tournament at Park City Feb. 23-24.
The four Panthers top four finishers all in the 5A semifinals. No. 3 ranked Liles placed third with an 8-3 victory over Emporia’s Levi Buckridge after losing 3-0 semifinal to Goddard’s No. 2 ranked Lucas Glover 3-0.
Carsyn Schooler placed third with a 3-2 overtime victory over Wichita Carroll’s Colton Ensz. Weber pinned Valley Center’s Eli Clouse (3:47) after losing 5-2 in the semifinals to Maize’s No. 1 ranked Aidan Campbell. Fritz lost a hard-fought 5-4 semifinal to Maize’s No. 2 ranked DeWayne Villapando and lost 6-4 for third place to Emporia’s No. 5 ranked Hunter Williams.
Eighth-place finisher Braxton Schooler (20-20, 138), 7th-place finisher Alex Randolph (28-16, 145), 6th-place finisher Jacob Meeks (17-15, 182) and 6th-place finisher Jeffrey Spragis (21-19, 160) earned their trips to the state tournament in the consolation rounds. Schooler, Randolph, Spragis and Meeks all won three matches.

Great Bend’s wrestling team features four returning state qualifiers heading to the 5A Valley Center regional Friday and Saturday. No. 1 ranked and defending state champion Goddard features 10 state-ranked wrestlers. No. 2 Maize, No. 3 Valley Center, No. 8 Newton and No. 9 Wichita Kapaun-Mt. Carmel headline the regional. Kapaun’s Michael Sprangler (120) and Goddard’s Garrett Lange (160) won state titles last year.
Great Bend’s No. 3 ranked Drew Liles and Gage Fritz (29-6, 152) each finished 2-2 at the 5A state meet last year. No. 5 ranked George Weber (35-8, 132) won one match and Braxton Schooler (18-17, 138) is a 2016 state qualifier. The 113-pound division features No. 1 Newton’s Grant Treaster, No. 2 Goddard’s Lucas Glover and Liles. The 132-division has No. 1 Maize’s Aidan Campbell, No. 2 Goddard’s Logan Pirl and Weber.
Great Bend coach Nathan Broeckelman is counting on his returning state qualifiers to qualify again. Other main contenders include Carsyn Schooler (13-8, 126) and Alex Randolph (25-14, 145).
“It’s the best week of practice we’ve enjoyed,” Broeckelman said. “They are focused. We have everyone healthy. There are some weights I’m confident in.”
The top eight 5A finishers qualify for 5A state at Park City next weekend. Most wrestlers can qualify with two wins.
“You don’t know where people are going to fall,” he said. “Most of our guys will fall in the five to 10 seeding range. We’re young at the upper weights. But they’ve shown some improvement and earned some quality wins.”
The Panthers earned a runner-up triphy at Salina South and finished runner-up at Hoisington. The Panthers finished 2-2 in WAC meets and 7-7 in dual meets overasll.
HOSINGTON — The No. 1 ranked 3A Hoisington wrestling team is on target to dominate its own regional tournament. The Cardinals feature five Central Kansas League champions — 138—Tanner Cassity (31-3); 152—Christopher Ball (36-1); 160—Joshua Ball (32-4); 170—Sean Urban (34-1) and 182—Wyatt Pedigo (31-3). Cole Steinert (15-10, 120).
Christopher Ball is a two-time 3A state champion, posting a career record of 155-10 along with a state runner-up finish as a ninth-grader. Ball pinned Norton’s Trenton Wright in the state finals last year. Sean Urban placed fifth, Cassity sixth and Pedigo was a state qualifier last year.
LARNED REGIONAL — Larned’s wrestling team faces tough competition at the 4A Abilene regional, which features state-ranked. The resurgent Indians have beeen a surprise team on the mat this winter.
First-place Central Kansas League finishers were Michael Saenz (26-9, 120); Braydon Lemuz (28-12, 132) and Keaton Thompson (14-10, 195). Placing as CKL runners-up were Kristopher Nolde (24-11, 138); Hunter Fitzpatrick (31-8, 145) and Jeremiah Slattery (25-8, 285).

HOISINGTON —Two-time defending state champion Christopher Ball (40-1, 152) led five Hoisington Cardinals to regional championships Saturday at Hoisington. Ball defeated Smith Center’s No. 2 ranked Colton Hutchinson 2-0 in the finals. Christopher Ball captured the 152-pound state titles the past two years and finished runner-up in 2015.
The Cardinals compete at the 3-1A state wrestling tournament at Fort Hays State next weekend.
No. 1 ranked Ball joined teammates No. 5 Tanner Cassity (34-3, 138), No. 3 Joshua Ball (36-4, 160), No. 4 Sean Urban (37-1, 170) and No. 1 Wyatt Pedigo (34-3, 182) to regional championships. Cassity placed sixth and Urban finished fifth in last year’s 3A state meet. Smith Center scored 194 points to edge the No. 1 ranked Cardinals (174) for the regional team title.
Joshua Ball defeated Bennington’s Layne Wilton 12-2 in the finals. Urban pinned Beloit’s Blaine Burks (0:59) in the title match. Pedigo pinned No. 5 ranked Tyson Villapando (0:15) in the championship match.
Hoisington’s Cole Steinert (16-11, 120) placed third with a 5-3 victory over Smith Center’s Joe Stocker to qualify for the state meet.
