Sedgwick downs Valley Falls to win 2-1A state baseball

SEDGWICK 11, VALLEY FALLS 1 (1ST) — Sedgwick's Lance Hoffsommer drove home three runs and pitched five solid innings as the Cardinals won the 2-1A state baseball championship. Henry Burns, Nolan Crumrine and Jeff Nold each drove home two runs. 

SEDGWICK 7, SPEARVILLE 6 (SEMIFINAL)Sedgwick rallied from a 5-2 deficit with five runs to overhaul upset-minded Spearville 7-6. Sedgwick’s Charles Austin Harjo started the comeback with a third-inning single to score Hoffsommer. Burns singled home Jayden Towles in the fourth inning. Justin Esposito doubled home Hoffsommer for a 5-5 tie after five innings.

Austin Wilkes delivered the game-winning sixth-inning single to score Remington Nold and Burns for a 7-5 lead.

Spearville’s Trace Tasset doubled home Tanner Miller, but reliever Henry Burns retired Hadley Fisher and Logan Hubbell to strand the tying runner on base.

Spearville raced to a 4-0 first-inning lead after the five baserunners reached base. Mason Dean singled home Easton Shenk and Jarrett Kliesen. Josh Cox singled home Ken Zimmerman and Dean. Sedgwick turned a 6-4-3 double play with shortstop and second baseman.

The Cardinals responded with two first-inning runs. Harjo singled home Crumrine. Austin Wilke singled in courtesy runner Western Anderson. Sedgwick’s Mason Dean scored on an error for a 5-2 lead.

VALLEY FALLS 3, ELLIS 0 (SEMIFINAL) — Valley Falls pitcher Brennen Miller threw a four-hit shutout. Miller stranded three baserunners in the third inning and two stranded runners in the first and seventh innings.

Ellis' defense collapsed with five errors that led to three unearned runs. Cooper Jepson and Avery Gatzemeyer scored on fifth-inning. Carson Clark scored on a sixth-inning error.
