The Silver Boy Boxing Club in Great Bend attended a golden gloves tournament in Hutchinson on Jan. 13 and 14.

Rocky Montanez, 13, won his match, increasing his record to 10-3.

Yaviel Zapata, age 9, also won his match and improved his record to 2-1.

“They’ve been working very hard,” said Silver Boys Boxing Coach Silverio Garcia. His Great Bend club is registered with USA Boxing (USABoxing.org).

The club is located at 8th and Jefferson and is open from 6-7:30 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Garcia said his goal is to promote community involvement in youth through sports and education and community support is appreciated. “I see the changes in these kids,” he said.

He always credits his own success to the late Jean Cavanaugh, a Great Bend philanthropist who supported education.
