St. John boys sweep 6th CPL title


NESS CITY — St. John medalist A.J. Miller (18:46.0) led a one-two finish with runner-up Uriel Calleros (18:46.6) and third-place medalist Trey Fisher (18:58.9) as the Tigers swept their sixth consecutive Central Prairie League cross country championship. St. John scored 13 points to outdistance runner-up LaCrosse (36).

Top 10 medalists included eighth-place medalist Marshall Woolf (19:57.5) and 10th-place medalist Dalton Nemec (20:10.2). The Tigers 

compete at 1A regionals at Wichita, Oct. 26.

Ellinwood’s Ashler Miller placed fifth (19:15.5) and Otis-Bison’s Peyton Butler earned ninth (20.01.9).

Runners competed in windy conditions and 70-degree temperatures on a hilly course with several turns at Ness City Golf Course.

“The boys competed hard today,” said St. John coach Joel Delp. “I was pleased that we were able to place high and win league.  Now, we can focus on regionals.”

The Macksville girls scored 18 points to surprise Ellinwood (20) to win the CPL championship. Macksville featured four top 10 finishers in runner-up Madison Butler (22:06.2); sixth place Abigail Ibarra (25:45.6); seventh-place Joselin Garcia (26:06.4) and ninth-place Melanie Vargas (27:45.0).

Ellinwood’s Erin Hammeke captured medalist honors (21:15.1) and third-place Ashtin Klepper (22:28.4) and eighth-place Brooklin Morgan (26:14.3) earned top 10 medals.

Central Plains’ Hannah Redetzke placed fourth (22:42.1).
