HAYS – The St. John boys cross country team won Saturday’s Monarch Invitational with 29 points followed by Cimarron (36) and Hutchinson Trinity (45).

Runners were divided into junior-senior and ninth-grade-sophomore divisions with 13-teams competing.  Scores from both races were combined to determine overall team scores.

ST. JOHN BOYS – Mason Osborne placed runner-up in the junior-senior division with a personal record time (18:03).  Other Tiger medalists were Wrangler Walker, fifth (19:23), Hunter Hanson, seventh (19:27), Trey Fisher, 10th (19:32) and Cashe McVey, 15th (19:54).

“Mason ran really well, and I was pleased that he was able to get his PR so early in the season,” said St. John coach Joel Delp. “It’s nice to start off the season by winning the TMP meet.  Wrangler Walker and Hunter Hanson ran a little faster than last year.  Trey Fisher and Cashe McVey ran tough despite tired legs from Friday’s football game. Our boys competed hard.  We have a long way to go, but it’s early in the season. These boys have shown that they are willing to work.”

Other Tiger junior-senior runners were Dalton Nemec,18th (20:26), Zack Fischer, 36th (24:39) and Ethan Huston, 44th (28:47).

Larned’s Braydon Lothman (18:17.98) captured first place in the ninth-grade-sophomore division. St. John’s Dylan Reed (19:52.55) finished seventh. Larned’s Ethan Haas (20:16.8) placed 10th.

ST. JOHN GIRLS – In the junior-senior division, Jaden Reed (28:38) finished 20th. In the ninth grade-sophomore division, Atarah Walker (24:44) earned a 10th place medal.

“The girls ran well in their first race of the season,” Delp said. “They ran hard and hopefully we can get their times down early in the season.”

ST. JOHN JUNIOR HIGH – In the seventh-grade boys race, Quade Smith (6:16) finished 12th and Chris Fernandez (9:48) placed 41st.

In the eighth-grade girls race, August Siefkes (15:02) finished runner-up and Mackenzie Hacker (17:54) finished 21st.

“I was excited for our junior high group,” Delp said. “They improved on their times from Tiger Pride Night.  They have been working hard, and I was excited to see them run so well.”
