Indian, Cardinal win state titles

SALINA  — Larned's No. 1 Luke Fischer (46-0, 215) and Hoisington's No. 1 ranked Josiah Ball (23-1, 138) captured 3-1A state wrestling championships.

Two-time state champion Fischer rolled past Rossville's unranked Barret Lietz 15-0.

Ball outscored Oberlin's No. 2 ranked Lukas Zodrow 9-1 in the championship match.

Fischer pinned Pittsburg Colgan's Dalton Schleif (0:30) and Smith Center's No. 3 ranked Eli Franklin (3:00) and Atchison County's Vincent Webb (2:51) to advance to the finals.

Fischer (40-3, 190) edged Norton's Garrett Urban 3-2 in the 2023 state championship match.

Ball pinned McLouth's Justin Patz (0:33), Cimarron's McCoy Nash (0:50) and Phillipsburg's Blake Buresh (1:33) to qualify for the finals. 

Josiah Ball (30-5, 132) lost 2-1 in the 2023 state championship to Hoxie's Carson Ochs (38-0). Ochs also captured Saturday's 132-pound championship. State runner-up Ochs (126) beat Ball on an injury in the 2022 quarterfinals.

Ball became the fourth state champion for the Ball family. Brandon Ball won four titles, Christopher Ball won three and Joshua Ball won a wrestling championship.

Hoisington's No. 5 Teron Kraft (43-8, 175) lost to Russell's Brayden Suchy (1:50) for third place.

Layton Hoffman (21-13, 285) lost an interesting third-round matchup against Nemaha Central's Holden Bass (1:12) after they played in

the 2A state football championship.
