HOISINGTON –After losing a hard-luck opener, Hoisington's summer baseball team pulled off a walkoff 3-2 victory over Hays-Thomas More Prep. Hoisington improves to a 9-5 record.
HOISINGTON 3, HAYS-TMP 2 (G2) – Hoisington was down to its final out when Trey Byers singled home Jerrod Bieberle for a 2-2 tie. Holt Hanzlick singled off pitcher Mason Robbins and Byers scored when left fielder Nicholas Herrmann misplayed the baseball for the game-winning play.
Hoisington pitcher Bransen Schulte struck out four batters in a solid 92-pitch outing. The Monarchs led 2-1 when Mark Rack's single drove home Herrmann in the seventh inning.
Both teams scored in the first inning. The Monarchs started with a walk, two singles and Tyson Dinkel scored on an error. Bransen Schulte fielded a grounder and catcher Jacob Specht relayed to first baseman Quentin Boxberger for a double play on Nick Helget.
HAYS-TMP 3, HOISINGTON 0 (G1, 8 innings) – The brilliance of Hoisington pitcher Derek Boxberger was nullified when the Cardinals' defense went south in a hard-luck 3-0 baseball loss to Thomas More Prep.
Derek Boxberger stranded seven baserunners and struck out seven batters in seven shutout innings. Boxberger's best work occurred when he struck out Zeke Haag and Feauto after a fourth-inning leadoff double by Ethan Atherton. Catcher Jacob Specht threw out Tyson Dinkel on an attempted steal in the first inning.
But a leadoff error a walk and another error handed the Monarchs three unearned runs. Noah Gibson scored on a wild pitch after a leadoff error. Mason Robbins scored on Haag's groundout. Helget singled home Atherton for a 3-0 lead.
Monarch pitcher Mark Rack matched shutout innings with Boxberger with four strikeouts. Rack retired Jacob Specht, Derek Boxberger and Quentin Boxberger after back-to-back second-inning walks. Catcher Dinkel threw out Bransen Schulte on an attempted fourth-inning steal.
