Three Panthers qualify for 5A state wrestling

Two champions headline seven state qualifiers

GODDARD – Great Bend’s No. 5 ranked Wyatt Weber upset Maize High’s No. 2 ranked Cayden Hughbanks (3:54) and captured the 5A substate wrestling championship. After Weber shocked Hughbanks, he finished the job with a 6-2 victory over Andover’s Gabe Maki in the finals.

Great Bend’s runner-up No. 2 Kaden Spragis (35-3, 106) and third-place finisher No. 5 ranked Avery Wolf (36-6, 113) also advance to the 5A state wrestling tournament Feb. 26 at Park City.

Newton’s No. 1 ranked Nick Treaster defeated Spragis 4-1 in the championship match. Wolf defeated Andover’s Landry Root 6-3 for third place.

John Szot (20-10, 120) placed sixth and Keyven Schroeder (26-12, 195) also competed.
