HAVEN — Everything fell in line for Hoisington to pull an upset against Central Kansas League rival Haven. But the Cardinals committed a turnover with a chance to win. Haven escaped with a hard-fought 45-43 basketball victory that went down to the final Hoisington possession.
Cardinal Bralen Thompson scored 15 points and Chase Steinert added nine points. The Cardinals outscored the Wildcats 12-5 for a 44-43 score. Thompson, Jason Robinson and Noah Dolezal each scored four points in the fourth quarter. Thompson and Haxton combined for five first-half 3-pointers.
"We were in the game to the end. That's a tough way to lose a game," said Hoisington coach Kyle Haxton. "We never got Bralen a touch. We battled."
Haven's Brant Sipe scored 16 points and Dalton Schrag added 15 points. Haven outscored the Cardinals 9-0 and 11-1 in two key stretches.
"We had two poor offensive stretches," Haxton said. "We've got to put a stop to them. We fought through it and moved the basketball. They extended their zone and realized Thompson and Haxton could shoot it."
