Seven Cardinals qualify for state

HILLSBORO – Hoisington regional champions Josiah Ball (36-5, 126) and Cole Gilliland (37-3, 285) led seven Cardinals into the 3-1A state tournament Friday-Saturday at Hays.

In finals, Ball downed Marysville’s Carter Trimble 6-0 and Gilliland pinned Minneapolis’ Bryce Worlock (0:34).

Regional runner-up Hoisington (137.5) placed behind team champion Marysville (146).

Cardinals Eastin Redetzke (28-6, 120) and Teron Kraft (21-21, 145) finished runner-up. Republic County’s A.J. Polansky edged Redetzke 6-5 and Sterling’s Nate Dold pinned Kraft (1:31).

Cardinals Deryk Yott (32-8, 138) and Logan Philbern (30-15, 220) placed third. Yott beat Republic County’s Alex Dyke, 17-0. Philbern defeated Marysville’s Juandre Walton, 8-2. Fourth-place finisher Xavier Redetzke (15-13, 132) lost 4-3 to Minneapolis’ Braylon Smith.

Stafford’s runner-up Tarrant Young (17-9, 132) was pinned by Council Grove’s Wyatt Johnson (2:25) in the finals.

Larned’s runner-up Luke Fischer (15-6, 152) lost 9-4 to Republlc County’s Jon Dyke in the finals.

Larned’s Carter Atteberry (31-10, 220) was pinned (1:04) by Beloit’s Braden Burks in the finals. Larned’s state-ranked Dillen Hook (34-5, 126) placed third with a 9-2 victory over Minneapolis’ Gage Carlson.
