MANHATTAN (AP) — Kansas State University confirmed that its highest-paid assistant basketball coach and top recruiter, Dalonte Hill, has resigned to take a similar position at the University of Maryland.
Hill was best known at Kansas State as the person who persuaded star forward Michael Beasley to come to the school in 2007. Beasley set several single-season records in 2007 before moving on to the NBA.
Hill, who is from the Washington D.C. area, came to Kansas State in 2006 after working as an assistant at North Carolina-Charlotte. He was believed to be the nation’s highest-paid assistant, making $423,750 annually with the potential for as much as $80,000 in bonuses. Hill, who reworked his contract last year, will owe Kansas State $50,000 in buyout money.
He will work for Mark Turgeon, a former University of Kansas player in the mid-1980s, who was hired last week as head coach of the Terrapins. Turgeon was the head coach at Texas A&M the last four seasons and before that, Wichita State for seven seasons.
