CLEVELAND— Royals right-hander Edinson Volquez is dropping his appeal of a five-game suspension and will begin serving the suspension Monday.
Volquez was suspended for Thursday’s on-field incident in which he threw a punch intended for White Sox pitcher Jeff Samardzija -- the punch missed badly.
Volquez will be able to return to action Saturday when the Royals play Detroit at Comerica Park.
Volquez’s turn in the rotation, however, comes up Friday. The Royals could turn to long reliever Chris Young for an emergency start.
Kansas City’s Lorenzo Cain (two games), Yordano Ventura (seven games) and Kelvin Herrera (two games), as well as Chicago’s Chris Sale (five games) and Samardzija (five games), were also suspended.
