Everything came together when Dr. Jerod Grove, M.D., visited Hays Medical Center.
Prior to that visit, Dr. Grove said he had two things on his mind when deciding where to continue practicing medicine - a good place for raising children and the opportunity to practice in a progressive medical community.
The general surgeon wanted to serve a smaller community, as he is a native of Dodge City, Ks. And now he offers a wide range of procedures and surgeries to his patients at St. Rose Health Center’s surgery suite, including colonoscopies, endoscopies and some biopsies.
Dr. Grove sees patients at St. Rose two Tuesdays a month. His partner, Paul Teget, D.O., is at St. Rose the other Tuesdays.
“The goal is to provide as many services at St. Rose as we can,” the surgeon said. “In a large majority of cases, pre-operative and post-operative office visits are scheduled here at St. Rose.”
Any surgery that requires general anesthesia is performed at HaysMed. Examples of these procedures are breast-related conditions, laparoscopic colon resection and hernia repair.
In addition, Dr. Grove performs surgeries involving the gallbladder and appendix, as well as gastrectomies at HaysMed.
Many procedures are performed with laparoscopic techniques and “in the future I plan on using the da Vinci robot in some cases,” Dr. Grove noted. “I used it during my residency and plan to pursue further advanced training in robotics techniques.”
Dr. Grove said he is glad to be part of the HaysMed outreach to St. Rose and central Kansas patients.
“This community deserves a quality resource such as St. Rose,” he said. “This is a beautiful new facility that accommodates those who need outpatient procedures and many other services.
“We are filling a void here,” he added. “It is great when people can get the care they deserve without going to the big city.”
After fulfilling the pre-med curriculum at Dodge City Community College, Dr. Grove earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry with an emphasis on analytical analysis, graduating Cum Laude in 2006. He then graduated from the University of Kansas School of Medicine with honors in 2010. His internship and residency were completed at KU also.
Dr. Grove has been recognized with a number of honors including the KU Professionalism in Residency Award that considers “exceptional student mentoring, while exhibiting the attributes of altruism, accountability, excellence, service, integrity and respect for others.”
He also was named outstanding chief resident in general surgery and earned several academic scholarships.
The surgeon and his wife, Sharon, have two children; Ryker is 2 and Brylie is 9 months. His brother, Dr. Jesse Grove, is a Great Bend chiropractor; their parents live in Scott City.
