One of the most talked about moments from the Women in the World Summit 2015, an annual event that aims to explore "the struggles and triumphs of women and girls around the globe" that was held in New York City from April 22 to April 24, was a stirring poem from a sixth-grader.
"I have a dream to never fail," Eunice Akoth, who is either 10 or 12 years old, announced during the recitation of her poem "My Dream" at the WITWS.
"This journey seems so long," she continued, "yet, I will not waver."
Eunice is from Kibera, Kenya, where "Most of the kids are raped, some are neglected by their parents, some are homeless," and many give up on their dream of something better, she said during the event. She hopes her poem can act as an inspiration to those in her community who suffer.
Her rousing, emotional performance has helped the poem rise to viral prominence.
"Eunice speaks with such a strong conviction that its hard not to be captured by her performance and inspired by her words," Global Citizen's Chelsea White wrote in response to the poem.
After the conclusion of her poem, Eunice joined a panel to discuss programs in Kenya that seek to help educate and empower women and girls.
