Former late-night cable news satirist and heir to David Letterman's throne at CBS' "Late Night" Stephen Colbert has made headlines for his announcement Thursday that he has organized the funds to cover every public school grant request currently listed on DonorsChoose.org in his home state of South Carolina.

Colbert chose to make the donation "as a product of the South Carolina public school system," he said when his donation was announced. The number of grant requests is reportedly 1,000 across 375 schools, and the donation totals $800,000.

"There are going to be some happy, happy teachers across the state," state schools Superintendent Molly Spearman told The Greenville News. "There's a great need out there, and thankfully Stephen Colbert is from South Carolina."

According to The Greenville News, Colbert paid for the donations by auctioning off the set from his hit Comedy Central Show, "The Colbert Report," and then partnering with The Morgridge Family Foundation and ScanSource, who matched his funds.

According to The Huffinton Post, Colbert sits on DonorsChoose.org's board of directors, and his donation was a surprise to teachers and students across the state.

According to a separate report by The Greenville News, Colbert's donation will help pay for things like books, new carpet, dodge balls "for recess play" and motivational posters.
