Morrison-McFadden VFW Post 3111 and VFW Auxiliary Post 3111 commemorated joining the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce with a ribbon cutting last Thursday. The Chamber staff, ambassador’s club, along with members and volunteers of the local VFW, were in attendance. They shared information on membership, community service, events, and tournaments held at the VFW.
“We want to ensure the community is aware of the VFW and the VFW’s purpose of serving veterans and the community,” said Mike Harbaugh, VFW Quartermaster. “Also, (we want) to highlight our facilities and event space that is available to rent for parties, weddings, fundraisers etc.”
The VFW Post and Auxiliary 3111 have been a part of the Great Bend community since 1953. The VFW offers many different services, programs and leagues throughout the year. The Post and Auxiliary work together for community projects and scholarships, such as the Patriot Pen and Voice of Democracy. They also work together to hand out Buddy Poppies, an event that is coming up on Nov. 11. Donations for poppies are then donated back to Veterans and the community.
The Auxiliary also provides many other donations to veterans throughout the area and the home in Fort Dodge. VFW members encourage veterans of foreign war to join the local chapter and help them continue their mission in helping others, supporting each other, and giving back to the community. The VFW is also looking for Auxiliary members, which are family members of veterans who have served in a foreign war, to join and support their mission. Check out the club and the history behind it.
