Barton Community College will present a Vocal Masterclass featuring Wichita State University Voice Professor Abigail Deiter at 4 p.m. March 30 in the Dorothy Moses Morrison Chapel in room F-157. The event is free and open to the public.

Deiter, soprano, attended Millikin University in Illinois for her Bachelor of Music Performance degree and eventually made her way to Wichita, where she earned her Master of Music degree at Wichita State University. While in school, she had the opportunity to travel abroad to Lucca, Italy, with WSU’s “Canta in Italia” program, where she studied Italian and worked on the roles of Norina in “Don Pasquale” and “Gilda” in “Rigoletto.” Her performed roles include “Nella” in “Gianni Schicchi,” “Galatea” in “Acis” and “Galatea” and “Servilia” in “La Clemenza di Tito.”

In 2019, she joined Geneva Light Opera as the “Susanna” understudy in their production of “Le Nozze di Figaro,” a role she performed previously at WSU. Most recently, Deiter was seen in Music on Site’s 2019 season as “Suor Osmina” in Puccini’s “Suor Angelica” and in the ensemble of “Amahl and the Night Visitors.” In February she joined Opera Kansas as a Ward/Ensemble member in their production of “Pirates of Penzance.”

Deiter is also a member of the Wichita Chamber Chorale and teaches voice lessons in the Wichita area.

Barton Vocal Instructor Jessica Perez said Deiter is an excellent resource for anyone hoping to improve as a vocalist.

“Abigail is an active performer in the state of Kansas and a professor at WSU,” she said. “She had a conservatory style training at Millikin University where she developed skills to teach the students discipline and responsibility in their musical training. Also, I think that her kind teaching approach makes students feel comfortable to explore their voices and sing with excellence. This is free to the public, please join us as an observer at the Morrison Chapel.”
