Genola McCarter will celebrate her 90th birthday with an Open House from 1 to 3 p.m. on June 30 at Sterling House, 1206 Patton Road in Great Bend. Friends and family are encouraged to attend or send cards.
Genola May Sankey was born on July 2, 1923 in LaCrosse. After graduating high school in LaCrosse, she joined the Cadet Nurse Corps on Sept. 23, 1943 while attending, and later teaching, at Grace Hospital School of Nursing. She graduated in May 1945 and was accepted into TWA’s Air Hostess program on Dec. 7, 1945. She flew with TWA for several years. On June 2, 1948, she was Commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps and appointed into the Officers Reserve Corp of the United States Army on the same date. She was honorably discharged on April 27, 1951. On Feb. 1, 1950 she married Harry McCarter. She was the proprietor of the Country Home Kennels of Great Bend for more than 30 years, and could often be seen taking a daily walk through town with her husband.
