Greetings from the Great Bend Public Library! Another Thursday, another busy day at the library on June 22. Starting things off, Luna, our fabulous pet partner dog will be here from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Come grab a book, sit down, and read to Luna. And remember, whoever logs the most minutes reading to Luna will have a chance to win a subscription to National Geographic Kids magazine! Reading time with Luna also counts towards your summer reading goal.

At 3 p.m. we have Tween Scene. This program is for children going into 4th grade through 6th grade. This week we will have fun with lava lamp science and relaxation exercises.

At 4 p.m. we have our crochet club as always.

Then, lastly, at 6 p.m. Thursday, join us for a special presentation: Women and Jazz. Women have been involved in jazz since the early 1920s, not just as vocalists, but as instrumentalists, composers and arrangers. The goal of this presentation is to provide an understanding of these women – particularly of their personal lives and their ability to read music, perform, and survive in a time when jazz was considered a “man’s world.” It also covers the full spectrum of years, genre, recordings, and recognized achievements.

On Friday, June 23, we have our next Casual Game Friday. We will be playing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Race against friends as your favorite characters from the Mario universe. Watch out for bananas and blue shells as you zip around a huge variety of zero-G tracks meant to put your driving skills to the test.

On Monday, June 26, teens can pick up our latest Teen Take and Make “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” sweater keychains. These are first come first serve, so come get yours starting Monday.

Weekly Story Times continue on Tuesday, June 27, with Baby Bounce Story Time at 9:30 a.m., followed by Friendship Circle Story Time and Kindness Kids Book Club concurrently at 10:30 a.m.

Also happening on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. is our first Genealogy Corner of the summer, where we will be going over the basics of how to start researching your family history.

On Wednesday, we are getting wild with the Kansas Wetlands Education Center, whose staff will be here to talk about Symbiotic Relationships in nature. Nature is filled with animals, plants, and fungi working together and we’ll explore those relationships with some fun activities and get to meet some living examples!

Lastly, along with our regular Thursday events we have two additional events on June 29, starting with Creativiteens at 4 p.m. We will be getting crafty in the Teen Spot using salt and watercolors to make festive firework painting. Then, it’s the adults’ turn to get crafty at 6 p.m. for our Adult Craft Night. Sticking with our groovy summer theme, we will be making boho wall hangings. Come try out this popular fad for free and go home with a beautiful piece of art.
