STERLING — Expect everything from the Beatles to Gershwin when the Sterling College Choirs present their spring Pops Concert at 6 p.m. this Sunday, April 24, in Culbertson Auditorium. Entitled “Songs from Stage, Screen, and Radio,” the Choral Pops Concert will feature a wide range of popular music performed by both the Concert Choir and the select ensemble known as the Highland Singers.

Choral Director Marisa Callan leads both groups.

“We look forward to our Pops Concert every year because it gives us the chance to perform music that is perhaps more familiar to audiences, and we have a lot of fun working on it,” Callan said.

Sunday night’s concert will feature the record-breaking song “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,’ from Disney’s 2021 film “Encanto.” The song not only reached the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart but also became the first chart-topping song for Lin Manuel Miranda, of Hamilton fame.

The concert choir will perform West Side Story’s “Somewhere” along with Kirby Shaw arrangements of both “Sway” and “Celtic Dance.” The Choir men will sing Stephen Sondheim’s song “Johanna” from his musical Sweeney Todd while the women take their turn with “Holding On To A Hero” from the movie/musical Footloose.

The Highland Singers will take the stage to sing the Pentatonix arrangement of “Take On Me,” Adele’s “Water Under the Bridge,” and John Lennon’s “Imagine.” Gershwin’s “Summertime” from Porgy and Bess will also be heard.

“Everything we’re doing has come from the stage, screen, or radio,” Callan said. “Some songs like ‘Somewhere’ are really from all three areas. There will literally be something for everyone in this concert. That’s what makes it ‘Pops’ – it’s popular music!”

Admission to the Choral Pops Concert is free of charge. The concert will be approximately one hour in length. For those not able to attend in person in Culbertson Auditorium, the concert will be livestreamed at www.sterling.edu/arts
