Greetings from the Great Bend Public Library! Halloween is right around the corner and at the library we have several events coming up to get you in the spooky mood. In fact, on Friday, October 22, Kiwanis will be on the library’s front lawn for their annual costume drive. Kids of all ages in need of a Halloween costume this year are welcome to come to pick out a costume between 10 a.m. and noon, while supplies last. Also happening Saturday is the National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) Interest meeting at 11 a.m. NaNoWriMo is a yearly challenge in November dedicated to getting that elusive first draft finished, so we are offering a space for local writers to check in on a weekly basis to keep up morale. During the interest meeting, we’ll give you a rundown of how NaNoWriMo works, as well as dates for check-ins and our Wrap Party in December.
On Tuesday, our Story Time Friends can look forward to a Halloween Carnival filled with games, tricks, and lots of treats! Kiddos are encouraged to come dressed in costume for this special event. We will also have our regular session of Tech Tuesday, which is not necessarily Halloween-themed, but tech issues can sometimes be quite scary, especially if you don’t know how to handle them. Let our own in-house tech buster take care of any problems possessing your device, starting at 11 am.
Thursday Crochet Club will meet at their regular time at 4 p.m. Later that evening, get ready for Fright Night Trivia at Dry Lake Brewery! We will be having a trivia night sure to leave you terrified (good thing the brewery has plenty of craft liquid courage on offer). This time our trivia will be themed after all things Halloween and Stranger Things. Join us at 7 p.m. if you dare to find out if you are the holder of ultimate knowledge about this haunted holiday and the Upside Down.
Friday, October 28, is another day packed with events, starting off with Focused Friday at 3:30 p.m. for teens. Join us as Shanna Long from The Center for Counseling and Consultation leads us through routines that encourage us to live intentionally. Please note that this event runs after hours, so be sure to arrange a way to get home after the event ends ahead of time. At 6 p.m. we have our family event, Steam Team, where adults and children will work together in teams to complete science, technology, engineering and math activities. Then at 7 p.m. that evening we have a special guest speaker, Mrs. Laura Keyes, who is excited to present “A Look Behind Orson Welles’ War of the Worlds.” (See story here.)
Last but certainly not least, our next Teen Takeout will be available for pickup first come, first served, while supplies last. This time the kit will come with everything teens need to make their own Cookie Mochi at home.
