LARNED — The Fort Larned Chapter NSDAR met on Nov. 12 at the Jordaan Library.
On Veteran’s Day, November 11, the club served breakfast prepared by the Sons of American Legion at the VFW in Larned. The annual parade was canceled due to weather. Several from the community gathered for the 11 a.m. service in the parking lot. Lunch was furnished by VFW Auxiliary.
A club member shared information on the “Magna Carta” exhibit that was on display for the month of November at The Sante Fe Trail Center west of Larned on U.S. 56. This document signed in 1215 by King John was a fundamental guarantee of rights and privileges. The exhibit was sponsored by the Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt and Judge Bruce Gatterman of the 24th Judicial District.
The program was on women’s participation in the Revolutionary War. Some soldiers’ wives and children accompanied them and did the cooking, nursing, laundry, mending and providing water to the soldiers. They earned wages for their support of the Revolution. Some women disguised themselves as men so they could fight for our country.
The next meeting will be at 2 p.m. on Dec. 10 at Jordaan Library. The chapter covers Pawnee, Edwards and Barton counties. All are welcome to attend.
