STERLING — It will be a hot pink overload as well as sparkles galore as Sterling College Theatre presents the musical version of the popular Reese Witherspoon movie “Legally Blonde.” The show will be presented at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, March 4 and 5 and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 6 in Culbertson Auditorium on the Sterling College campus.

“Legally Blonde: the musical” with book by Heather Hatch and music and lyrics by Lawrence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin is about more than high energy dance, sorority girl vibes, and the color pink. It’s about overcoming stereotypes and reinventing yourself by being true to who you are.

Leading the 31-member cast in the Reese Witherspoon role of Elle Woods is Rachel Thomson of Buhler. Elle, the UCLA sorority girl, expects her boyfriend, Warner, played by John Williams of St. Louis, Mo. and Nick Gift of Peabody, to propose to her on their next date. Instead, he dumps her and leaves for Harvard Law School telling Elle she isn’t serious enough for him.

Elle decides to get into law school too, determined to prove her intelligence to Warner and win him back. Elle’s florescent pink outfits and “valley girl” persona are out of place at Harvard, and Professor Callahan, played by Jake Pieplow of Sterling, throws her out of class on the first day. To make matters worse, Elle learns that Warner has a new girlfriend, Vivienne, played by Alicia DeHaan of Salina.

Elle is willing to do anything necessary to win Warner’s affection, including dying her hair, dressing as a pink bunny, and even opening her law books, but she also wants to be one of the students selected for Professor Callahan’s exclusive internship. For the first time in her life, she has a chance to be seen as more than a blonde fashionista, and to pursue her own dreams instead of a man, which just might be “So Much Better,” one of the anthems in the show.

Tickets for the Sterling College Theatre production of “Legally Blonde: the musical” are $15 for adults and $5 for students and are available online at www.sterling.edu/arts or at the door before each performance.
