According to the Sacramento Zoo, the six American flamingo chicks hatched between June 28 and July 30. The eggs were collected from their flock and artificially incubated to ensure hatching success.
Baby flamingos are born with white or grey down. Their fuzzy feathers and hugely proportioned legs with a body that resembles a lifted monster truck makes them seem similar to the awkwardness of teen years. The zoo website noted that the white down turns to grey and then to pink as they mature. The pink pigmentation comes from aquatic organisms they eat.
