Greetings from the Great Bend Public Library! Wow, the time has flown by this summer.
Next week is the home stretch of our Summer Library Program, but let’s cover what’s happening this week first. Starting things off on Thursday, Luna, our fabulous pet partner dog, will be here from 10:30 a.m. to noon. At 3 p.m. we have our next Tween Scene, where we will be making upcycled bottle art.
Then at 3:30 p.m. for teens, we have our Teen Manga and Anime Club, where we will be watching the anime movie “Your Name.” The movie follows two teenagers who suddenly swap bodies. When the boy and girl decide to meet in person, things become even more complicated as a mystery begins to unfold. Teens entering 6th grade through those who graduated 12th this year are welcome to join us for the movie and some free popcorn.
At 6 p.m., Darren Ivey will be here as part of our Third Thursday Speaker Program to present “Great Library Capers: Libraries, Archives, and Those Who Steal from Them.” Darren L. Ivey is an author and historian.
He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in History from Kansas State University, and a Master of Library Science degree from Emporia State University. He is currently the Director of Library and College Archives at Barton Community College in Great Bend as well as the Collections Manager of the Cohen Center for Kansas History.
On Friday afternoon, we will have our last Teen Café of the summer. Enjoy a cup of Joe and make buttons to add some flair to your clothing or bag (limit two per teen).
Monday, Shanna Long from the Center for Counseling will be here to teach you how to focus on “you” while working on self regulation, calming, relaxing, and mindfulness skills through playing games, making crafts, and more.
We will have our regular Baby Bounce Story Time at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, followed by a combined Friendship Circle Story Time and Kindness Kids Book Club together at 10:30 a.m. PBS will be here to celebrate with Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood. We will read the book “Daniel’s New Friend,” which tells the story of when Daniel meets Chrissie, who uses crutches to walk, and develops a fun, new friendship with her.
We will also get to watch the episodes that pairs with the book. At the end, each child will receive a free book and craft. Later on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m., we have a mash-up of Upcycle It! and VolunTeens, where we will be making cat and dog toys for the local shelter. Also at 3:30 p.m. we have Genealogy Corner for adults. This time we will be covering FamilySearch and how this program can be used to research your family tree.
Wednesday, we are getting wild at the library with the Rolling Hills Zoo. They will be here with their “What’s In My Backyard? Zoo to You” presentation. The interactive lesson will include hands-on activities with bio-facts and an introduction to three live animals. Then on Thursday, join us for our last Read to Luna and Tween Scene events of the summer.
