STERLING — Even before classes begin this week at Sterling College, the theater has been buzzing with activity. The first show of the new year: “Vanities: The Musical” will be presented on the stage of Culbertson Auditorium on the Sterling College campus on Friday and Saturday, August 25-26, at 7:30 p.m.

“Vanities: The Musical” opens the theater season and is the special project of three graduating theater and musical theater majors. The show takes the audience on a journey through the lives of three best friends: Mary, Joanne, and Kathy, and is set from 1963 through 1990.

Sterling College senior musical theater major Rachel Thomson from Hutchinson plays Kathy and is choreographing the show. Fellow senior musical theater major Keeley Coon from Eurkea plays Mary and is costuming the show. Sophomore Mary Little from Hutchinson completes the cast as Joanne.

Senior theater major Emily Jones from Wichita is designing the set and lighting for the show as her senior project. The small cast, intimate show will be presented with the audience seated on the stage; therefore, seating is limited.

The musical showcases the trio of friends and their transition from carefree high school students to adults navigating the complexities of life, love, and aspirations. As the years unfold, their individual paths diverge, leading to moments of joy, heartbreak, and ultimately, self-discovery.

Playwright Jack Heifer adapted his own late 1970s play, also entitled “Vanities,” for the musical version. The music and lyrics are by David Kirshenbaum, who seamlessly transports the audience through different decades with a blend of catchy pop tunes, heartrending ballads, and toe-tapping numbers.

At its core, “Vanities: The Musical” celebrates the enduring bond of female friendship. Mary, Joanne, and Kathy’s relationship evolves through every stage of life, reflecting the unique challenges and joys that come with growing together. The musical portrays their unbreakable connection as a source of strength and comfort, reminding audiences of the significance of supportive friendships.

Music faculty member Marisa Callan is both the music director and advisor for the show. Retired Sterling High School theater director Betsy Dutton is assisting the production with staging and direction.

Due to some of the content the show is rated PG-13 and may not be appropriate for children 12 or under. Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for students and are available online at www.sterling.edu/arts.
