Hay bale fire spreads to field

A blown out tire and the wind each played a factor in a fire that occurred Tuesday evening southeast of Great Bend.

At 6:50 p.m., a truck pulling a trailer was traveling east in the 300 block of SE 20 Road when the trailer blew a tire. According to the Barton County Sheriff’s Office, when the tire started to spark it ignited the hay bale on the trailer. The driver unhooked the trailer and drove forward, but the fire quickly spread to the south ditch and field.

The Great Bend Fire Department and Ellinwood Police Department also responded to the scene.
