At 9:22 p.m. Thursday, Great Bend firefighters were dispatched to a possible structure at 1401 18th St. Upon arrival they found light smoke in the residence. Chief Mike Napolitano said the owner had been using an outdoor fireplace that was under an awning against the house and a small fire had started under the wood deck it was sitting on.
“They thought they had the fire out and it started back up,” Napolitano said. “We found wood chips underneath the deck on fire in front of the crawl space. The wind blew the smoke into the residence through crawl space.” Damage was described as minor.
Firefighters made three ambulance runs Thursday.
