A passenger in a 2002 Volkswagen Beetle that went of U.S. 283 early Monday in Hodgeman County was seriously injured, Kansas Highway Patrol reports.
Alfonso Cardenas, 21, of Fremont, Neb., was taken to the Hodgeman County Health Center in Jetmore and later flown by Lifeflight to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. A hospital spokesman said he was in fair condition Monday evening.
The accident occurred at 12:10 a.m. Monday on U.S. 283, approximately seven miles north of Jetmore. The southbound car left the roadway onto the shoulder. The driver, 50-year-old Alina Hernandez of Dodge City, over-corrected and the car slid sideways across the highway into the east ditch. It came to rest after rolling 1.5 times, landing on the driver’s side of the vehicle.
Hernandez was also taken to the hospital in Jetmore with undetermined injuries. They were not wearing seat belts.
